RACING 2009
Championship
Results
for Oulton Park - 6th Round - 20th May 2009
The
championship descended on Oulton Park in Cheshire which was the
latest destination for Round 6 of The 2009 Legends Cars
Championship, The circuit which is set in the grounds of Oulton
Hall is characterised by its rapidly changing gradients and
blind crests leading into some very unforgiving corners.
A total of 23
cars turned up at Oulton for round 6 of the championship with
the weather doing the normal ‘Legends’ thing, puddles in the
paddock and the heaviest rain of the day during practice. Not
for the first time this season the days racing was dominated by
Lee Fitzpatrick with 3 1st places giving the #2 car a
perfect day, one which would end with Lee leading the
championship.
Lawrence Davey
clinched second overall on the day with 3 solid drives not
finishing out of the top 4 all day, In third overall on the day
was the #11 car of “soon to be married” Simon Belcher.
The “Driver Of
The Day” Trophy was awarded to Gerard McCosh “a true legends
racing gentleman” for what was probably Gerard’s highest ever
overall round finish.
Heat 1
The race started with #1 Higgins
leading by the second corner despite starting the race from the
3rd row of the grid, He was not to have it his own
way, the safety car was out for laps 2 & 3, on the 4th
lap John ‘Jon’ was passed by #12 Treherne for 2nd
place who also towed #19 Davey passed. That was how the race
would finish with car #12 Treherne setting the fastest lap of
the race on lap 7 with an average speed of 78.71mph. Jamie
Clarke’s return to the Legends grid was rewarded with 6th
place following a superb drive from the back row of the grid.

Heat 2
A perfect drive by #2 Fitzpatrick was
rewarded with both fastest lap and 1st place by
12.496 seconds, the next 3 positions were separated by less than
a second. #19 Davey who finished just 0.06 seconds in front of
#11 Belcher and 0.358 seconds in front of #8 Brace came home in
fourth place. The race was not so good for #1 Higgins or #12
Treherne who had very expensive DNF’s.

Final
What a finale to a great days racing
#2 Fitzpatrick completed his clean sweep with his third 1st
place of the day finishing 2.315 seconds in front of his Burnett
Motorsport team mate #1 Higgins. The 3rd, 4th
& 5th place could have been anyone of three with #12
Treherne, #19 Davey & #11 Belcher crossing the line in that
order, with just 3/10ths of a second between them. I
must mention #8 Bracey’s high speed spin going into Island Bend
which left his car delicately balanced on the tyre wall.
